The acronym “STEM” stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM education is defined by the National Science Teaching Association as “an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy.” A critical element of inspiring students to pursue careers in STEM fields is providing them with an understanding of how STEM concepts learned in school will translate to real-world applications and, by extension, geo careers in geospatial intelligence.

Why STEM?

The urgency for geospatial intelligence professionals is on the rise in recent years as the need for geospatial technologies becomes more present. In order to provide these services to the intelligence community, individuals must be prepared with STEM in mind to ensure the skills and expertise necessary to continue driving innovation. At Geo Owl, we equip the top professionals in GEOINT who have extensive background in STEM fundamentals. In order to be ready for geo careers, a heavy knowledge in STEM deems the fundamental blocks for a successful career in geospatial technologies and intelligence.

Preparing Students For Careers In Geospatial Technologies

To meet the growing demand for Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) professionals, we must prepare the next generation of STEM professionals with the skills and expertise required to continue driving innovation. Introducing curricula and educational programming focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is intended to help better prepare students in these areas of learning and create practical applications for how these lessons apply to the real world. STEM education is designed to encourage students to not only pursue these subjects but continue innovating and researching in their education and career paths. This focus will help prepare future generations to handle our world’s biggest problems. A key component of preparing students for a GEOINT-related career is teaching creative and analytical problem-solving beyond rote and didactic instruction.

Geo Owl

The GEOINT Community is rapidly growing and this growth is projected to continue through the next decade. Consistent with this growth, increasing demand for talented GEOINT professionals requires an intentioned focus on building the workforce of tomorrow. Geo Owl recruiters work around the clock to find the world’s best and brightest scholars to join their team of intel specialists. We worked with UNCW to start an internship program in May of 2019, which has led to the employment of several UNCW students.
