With high-resolution mapping and lidar (light detection and ranging), geospatial analysts can assess erosion, analyze storm impacts, plan mitigation and restoration efforts, and conduct long-term monitoring.  

For example, during Hurricane Idalia in 2023, Geo Owl’s UAS team documented significant changes in sand distribution before and after the storm surge in affected areas. Geo Owl leverages geospatial tech to help make informed decisions and implement strategies that protect coastal areas, resources, and infrastructure.

Invasive Species Monitoring 

Invasive species pose a serious threat to ecosystems by outcompeting native plants and animals, disrupting habitats, and altering ecological balances. Effective management requires precise, timely data to control and mitigate their spread. 

At Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Geo Owl worked with NCDOT to address the spread of Phragmites australis. Our UAS team captured high-resolution imagery to map the invasive plant’s distribution and monitor its spread. Using machine learning algorithms, we analyzed the data to identify areas needing intervention. This approach significantly reduced the invasive species’ spread, showcasing the effectiveness of geospatial technology in managing environmental threats and protecting local ecosystems. 

 

Forest Management 

Effective forest management relies on accurate, timely data to tackle various environmental challenges. Geospatial technology is crucial for providing insights into forest health, wildfire risks, and land use changes. For instance, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) employs advanced remote sensing, GIS, and high-resolution mapping to oversee its extensive network of national forests and grasslands. This technology enables precise tracking of wildfire progression, forest health assessment, and management of erosion and invasive species.  

Recently, Geo Owl was awarded a $70 million contract by the USFS to enhance these efforts with our geospatial expertise, helping to protect and sustain vital forest resources. 

Flood Risk Management 

Flooding can be catastrophic, but geospatial technology enhances our ability to prepare and respond. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) uses geospatial tools to create detailed flood maps and predict flood-prone areas. By analyzing satellite and aerial data, FEMA can better plan and implement flood prevention and response strategies (FEMA). This technology aids communities in minimizing damage and protecting lives during flood events. 

Disaster Response 

In the aftermath of disasters, timely and accurate information is crucial for an effective response. Geospatial technology supports disaster response by providing real-time data on affected areas. This information helps coordinate recovery efforts, allocate resources efficiently, and plan effectively during the recovery process.
